Sooners' Rally Falls Short at SDSU

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Oklahoma's second-half comeback fell short Wednesday night on the road as the Sooners fell to South Dakota State, 67-61, inside Frost Arena.
Down 38-26 at halftime, OU (3-5) limited the Jackrabbits (7-2) to just 5-of-26 (.192) shooting in the second half as OU trimmed the deficit down to 50-47 at the start of the fourth quarter. The Sooners would get within two points with 19 seconds left in the final quarter, but South Dakota State would seal the win at the free throw line down the stretch to hold on for the victory.
For the third straight game, Shaina Pellington led the Sooners in scoring. The freshman poured in 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field and a career-high 6-of-10 at the free throw line before fouling out late in the fourth quarter. Pellington is averaging 17.7 points and shooting .575 from the floor over the last three games.
Gabbi Ortiz chipped in 13 points and knocked down three treys against South Dakota State. The senior was also 2-of-2 at the charity stripe and has now hit 36 conescutive free throws dating back to last season. The Racine, Wis., native now ranks eighth all-time at OU in career made 3-pointers with 154.
Ortiz also hit a pair of free throws and needs three more makes at the stripe to set the school record for most consecutive made free throws, which is held by LaNeisha Caufield (39, 2001-02).
Maddie Manning added 10 points, eight rebounds and finished with a career-high four blocks. The graduate student guard also collected three steals in a season-high 39 minutes of action.
Ijeoma Odimgbe and Mandy Simpson pulled down nine rebounds apiece to lead OU on the glass. Simpson's nine rebounds set a career high, while Odimgbe's nine boards were the most by the junior since pulling down nine against Cal last season. Gileyza Penzo registered a career-high four assists off the bench.
OU outshot South Dakota State, .328-313, while the Jackrabbits were 7-of-25 (.280) from deep and hit 20-of-23 (.870) at the free throw line. The Sooners finished just 4-of-18 (.222) from beyond the arc and were 15-of-24 (.625) at the line.
South Dakota State's Macy Miller led all scorers with 17 points, while Madison Guebert finished with 16 points for the Jackrabbits.
