NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team pulled out a 3-2 win over West Virginia at McCasland Field House on Saturday night. The win propelled the Sooners to 6-18 on the year and 3-8 in the Big 12, which tied them for fifth in the league standings.

Oklahoma fell behind after the first; a 25-21 win for the Mountaineers (15-10, 3-8). The Sooners went ahead with back-to-back set wins; 25-23 and 25-18. OU hit .360 in the third behind five kills on seven attempts off the bench for sophomore outside hitter Erin Dibble (Frisco, Texas).

West Virginia kept the match going with a 25-16 win in the fourth. The Mountaineers scored the first point of the fifth before Oklahoma rattled off six in a row; forcing WVU to burn both of its timeouts for the set. The Sooners would hit .364 and clinch the match by taking the fifth, 15-10.

“It was so important to grab the momentum early in the fifth set,” said OU head coach Santiago Restrepo. “In a game to 15 points, when you start 3-1 or 4-1, you put a lot of pressure on the team that is trying to come from behind.”

Four players from each side ended the match in double figures for kills. OU junior outside hitter Madison Drescher (Southlake, Texas) led all players with 17. Junior outside hitter Alyssa Enneking (League City, Texas) was second on the team with 14 kills and added 10 digs for her team-leading 14th double-double of the season.

Enneking’s 14 kills pushed her season total to 359. She passed Kierra Holst (2013) for the fifth most kills in a single season during the 25-point rally-scoring era (2008-present). It is also the 10th highest total by a Sooner since 2001.

Freshman middle blocker Paige Anderson (McKinney, Texas) added 11 kills and five blocks, while Dibble chipped in with 10 kills and three blocks. West Virginia outside hitter Payton Caffrey led the visitors with 13 kills to go with 10 digs.

Redshirt-junior libero Rachel Manriquez (Edmond, Okla.) led all players with a season-high 22 digs. WVU libero Giana Gotterba led her side with 20. Joining Manriquez and Enneking in double figures for the Sooners were senior defensive specialist Emma Kelly (Houston, Texas) with a career-high 16 and junior setter Audrey Alford (Norman, Okla.). Alford’s 52-assist, 10-dig effort marked her fifth double-double of the season.

“Our back row is one of the things that I was really impressed by,” added Restrepo. “I thought Emma served really tough and put us in very good positions to block. Rachel did a very good job passing and defending. We were able to do a lot with those touches.”

The Sooners are on the road on Wednesday, November 8 against Texas Tech at 6 p.m. They return home on November 15 to take on Iowa State.
