NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma baseball and softball teams hosted a joint Halloween Game fundraiser at Marita Hynes Field to benefit The Children’s Hospital at OU Medical Center on Wednesday night. The two Sooner programs launched a fundraising campaign with the Vs. Cancer Foundation on Friday, September 29 to raise money for the enhancement of OU Children’s Paws for Purpose program.

Through the conclusion of the event, which exceeded 1,200 in attendance, the teams combined to raise over $16,000 in donations. Over $14,000 was raised through online donations and another $2,450 was donated by the Landers Auto Group through the post-game home run derby. Additional donations can be made at the gate or online through the baseball and softball pages on SoonerSports.com.

At $50 per home run, 10 Sooners, five from each team, combined to hit 49 home runs. Softball’s Jocelyn Alo (Hauula, Hawaii) led all players with seven home runs. Catcher Hannah Sparks (Thomasville, Ala.) was second with six home runs. Four OU baseball hit four home runs apiece.

The baseball team came away with the victory, 2-1, in five innings. Catcher Brady Lindsly (Keller, Texas), dressed in a squirrel costume, hit a solo jack to start the scoring. Outfielder Jacob Walker (Hallsville, Texas), a pink flamingo, added to the lead with a two-out single in the top of the world.

The softball team cut the lead in half with an inside-the-park home run by Alo and her teammates dress as OU football players. The home run was the only blemish against pitcher Jake Irvin (Bloomington, Minn.), who appeared as Jake From State Farm®.

The Children’s Hospital VOLUNTEERS charity has been the local recipient of OU baseball’s “Shave for the Brave” campaign over the last three years, which yielded over $80,000 in funds. Half of those donations went to Vs. Cancer’s national foundation for cancer research, while the other half went to benefit OU Children’s. The funds were utilized to enhance the environment of OU Children’s cancer and blood disorders unit with new game systems, toys and artwork to help kids feel more at home while receiving treatment at the hospital. This year, all proceeds will remain local to benefit OU Children’s, which is seeking funds to enhance its facility therapy dog program; Paws for Purpose.

Additional information regarding the Vs. Cancer Foundation and The Children’s Hospital at OU Medical Center and direct links on how to donate are available at SoonerSports.com.

The Sooner baseball team continues its Red & White Series with game three Friday at 3 p.m. OU softball resumes its fall schedule Sunday with a doubleheader against Arkansas beginning at noon.
