NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma baseball and softball teams will team up to host a Halloween Game at Marita Hynes Field on Wednesday, October 25. The two Sooner programs launched a fundraising campaign with the Vs. Cancer Foundation on Friday, September 29 to support The Children’s Hospital at OU Medical Center.

“It’s an exciting time for our team in a couple of ways,” began OU baseball coach Skip Johnson. “This event gives us a chance to help kids that need our help and to build a stronger relationship with a great softball program. We’re excited about the event. It was a great event last year and we’re looking forward to the community coming out for some fun that supports a great cause.”

OU baseball teamed with Vs. Cancer in its “Shave for the Brave” campaign from 2014-16 and raised over $80,000 to benefit the foundation’s research to eliminate childhood cancers and OU Children’s. This year, all proceeds will remain local to benefit OU Children’s, which is seeking funds for a facility therapy dog to work with its cancer patients.

“Our volunteer pet therapy program has been strong for more than 20 years,” said Sara Jacobson, executive director of The Children’s Hospital VOLUNTEERS, the 501(c)3 non-profit organization at OU Children’s. “We were thrilled to expand our overall Paws for Purpose program with Targa, our first facility dog, last month. One dog can only do so much, especially for kids with chronic illnesses or lengthy treatments. Our next Paws for Purpose goals are to recruit more volunteer pet therapy dogs and add additional facility dogs dedicated to specific patient populations like cancer and blood disorders.”

The Children’s Hospital VOLUNTEERS charity has been the local recipient of OU baseball’s “Shave for the Brave” campaign over the last three years, which yielded over $80,000 in funds. Half of those donation went to Vs. Cancer’s national foundation for cancer research, while the other half went to benefit OU Children’s. The funds were utilized to enhance the environment of OU Children’s cancer and blood disorders unit with new game systems, toys and artwork to help kids feel more at home while receiving treatment at the hospital.

The fundraising campaign launched in conjunction with Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and culminates with the intrasquad scrimmage, which will once again be played in costume, between the two programs the week leading into Halloween. The game originated in 2013 at baseball’s L. Dale Mitchell Park and evolved with the inclusion of OU softball, which hosted the game in 2015. "It's a pleasure to join forces with Skip Johnson and the OU Baseball team for a special cause like OU Children's Hospital,” said head softball coach Patty Gasso. “It is our duty to give back to those in need and what better way to raise money than to see your favorite softball and baseball athletes dressed up in Halloween costumes playing the game they love. We encourage fans to come out and support this great event and generate some funds for such a great cause."

The game will start at 6:30 p.m. with gates opening at 5:30. Admission is free and all fans are encouraged to attend in costume. Kids attending the game in costume will have the opportunity to trick-or-treat at the field and meet the OU student-athletes from both teams. All children in attendance will be welcomed on to the field for a post-game group photo opportunity.
