OU Wins Big 12 Opener at Baylor
WACO, Texas — Oklahoma (4-0, 1-0) jumped to a 28-10 lead early in the second quarter, then had to rally from behind to post a 49-41 win at Baylor (0-4, 0-1) in running its nation-leading winning streak to 14 games (tied for seventh longest in school history).
With OU clinging to a 49-41 lead after Baylor recovered an onside kick with 1:41 left in the game, the Sooners' Ogbonnia Okoronkwo sacked Bears quartback Zach Smith near midfield on a third-down play and forced a fumble. OU's Caleb Kelly recovered it to seal the victory.
OU gashed the Baylor defense for 625 yards on the night and outgained the Bears 10.6 yards per play to 6.2. The Sooners set a school record by surpassing the 30-point mark for the 14th consecutive game.
Baker Mayfield's 48-yard pass to Jeff Badet put the Sooners on top 35-31 with 0:55 left in the third quarter, and Trey Sermon's 34- and nine-yard TD runs in the fourth quarter made it 49-31. All of Sermon's career-high 148 rushing yards came in the fourth quarter on 12 carries (12.3 average).
Mayfield finished 13-for-19 for 283 yards and three TDs, and tied Sam Bradford's Big 12 record by throwing for at least two touchdowns in his 17th consecutive game. The senior now has 13 TD passes on the season without an interception.
Sophomore running back Abdul Adams rushed for a 99-yard score to set an OU record for longest play from scrimmage. The previous record was shared by Jeff Frazier (96-yard run in 1995) and Buck McPhail (96-yard run in 1951). Adams finished the game with a career-high 164 yards on 11 carries (14.9 average) as the Sooners rushed for a season-high 342 yards.
Senior fullback Dimitri Flowers recorded his first-career two-touchdown day, scoring on a 52-yard reception and a three-yard run in the first half. Tight end Mark Andrews accounted for OU's first TD on a 24-yard reception from Mayfield.
OU, which posted its 13th straight true road win and 17th consecutive Big 12 victory, improved to 24-3 all-time against Baylor and to 12-2 in Waco.
The Sooners are off next week before hosting Iowa State on Oct. 7.
