NORMAN — Fresh off an impressive victory to start the 2017 season, three members of the No. 2 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team swept the Big 12 Conference weekly awards, the conference announced Monday.
Senior Chayse Capps (Big 12 Gymnast of the Week), junior Stefani Catour (Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week) and freshman Maggie Nichols (Big 12 Newcomer of the Week) all received accolades for the league.
Capps, Catour and Nichols were all impactful in the meet, aiding the Sooners to a 197.750 in the victory over then-No. 3 Alabama, good for the highest season-opening score in program history. All three Sooners competed as part of OU's bar lineup that recorded a 49.575, tied for the fifth-highest total on the event in the school record books.
For the sixth time in her career, Capps has been recognized as the conference's gymnast of the week. It is her 12th overall nod from the Big 12, one shy of tying the conference records. Against Alabama, the senior was a key component in OU's victory, recording a 39.575 all-around score in the win. Capps posted four marks of at least 9.85, scoring a 9.9 on both vault and bars, a 9.85 on beam and a closing with a 9.925 on floor. She sits in the top eight nationally in four categories, including the all-around (T-2nd), vault (T-8th), bars (T-4th) and floor (T-3rd).
Catour, the Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week, competed on both bars and beam in OU's win, scoring a 9.9 and 9.85, respectively. Her 9.9 on bars ties for the fourth-best total in the country on opening weekend. The accolade represents the second of Catour's career, having also earned the honor once last season.
Nichols impressed in her collegiate debut, posting the top all-around total in the nation with a 39.725. The Little Canada, Minn., native recorded four scores of at least 9.9 in her first meet as a Sooner and won the all-around, bars (9.975) and floor (9.95) titles. She also tallied OU's top team score on beam with a 9.9 and contributed a 9.9 on vault. After the first weekend of competition, Nichols sits first in the national rankings in all-around and checks in in the top eight on vault (T-8th), bars (1st), beam (T-5th) and floor (T-1st).
In addition to Capps, Catour and Nichols, five Sooners are in the top 15 nationally on at least one event, including Brenna Dowell (T-1st on vault, T-4th on bars), AJ Jackson (T-14th on vault, T-6th on floor), Charity Jones (T-6th on floor), Nicole Lehrmann (T-4th on bars) and McKenzie Wofford (T-4th on bars).
As a team, the Sooners sit first nationally on both bars and floor, are tied for second on vault and share fifth place on beam.
This weekend, the Sooners continue their home slate, welcoming No. 8 UCLA to the Lloyd Noble Center on Sunday. The meet is set for a 3:45 p.m. CT start. Tickets are available for purchase online or by calling the OU Athletics Tickets Office at (405) 325-2424 or toll-free at (800) 456-GoOU.
