Miyazaki Leads Sooners at ITA Regionals

MINNEAPOLIS – Oklahoma women’s tennis added another seven singles wins and went undefeated in doubles during the second day of the ITA Central Regional tournament Friday.

 OU’s three doubles pairs each started Friday with a victory. Redshirt senior Mimi Fotopoulos paired with freshman Ann Selim for the first Sooner win of the day, 8-4, over Kylie Boyer and Michelle Lo of Nebraska-Omaha. The next victory came when freshman Julie Byrne and junior Lily Miyazaki quickly defeated UMKC’s Katie Fries and Mariam Kuasbediani, 8-1.

Freshman Serena Nash and junior Simran Sethi teamed up for the final victory of the morning session, 8-4, over Minnesota’s Barbara Mancera and Camila Vargas Gomez.

The Sooners got off to another strong start in singles on Friday, racking up seven wins as Miyazaki earned a spot in the round of 16. 

In the main draw, OU picked up five wins with Miyazaki claiming two more victories. Her first victory came in a three-set marathon match, beating South Dakota’s Ellie Burns, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. In the third, she topped Kansas’ Tatiana Nikolaeva, 6-3, 6-1, to advance.

Selim recorded a hard-fought victory, 6-1, 1-6, 6-2, over Iowa’s Elise Van Heuvelen of Iowa before falling 6-0, 6-0, to Oklahoma State’s Vladica Babic in the third round. Nash added another win, besting Kuasbediani, 6-4, 6-4, but fell to Oklahoma State’s Katarina Stresnakova, 6-0, 6-1, in the third round. 

Missouri’s Tate Schroeder defeated Byrne, 7-5, 6-4, to send the freshman into the consolation bracket.

Fotopoulos added another win when she bested Iowa’s Adorabol Huckleby, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5. The Prairie Village, Kan., native fell in the third round to Minnesota’s Carolina Ryba, 7-5, 6-2, in the Sooners’ last match of the night.

On the consolation side, junior Malene Stripp and Sethi also picked up wins. Stripp topped Northern Iowa’s Sydney Wolfe, 7-5, 6-0, while Sethi collected a 6-3, 7-6 (1) decision over Missouri’s Clare Raley.
