NORMAN, Okla. – No. 9 Oklahoma advanced to the championship match of the ITA Kick Off Weekend after defeating Virginia Tech 4-1 Saturday at the Gregg Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion.

The Sooners (2-0) won the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.

Nick Papac and Peerakit Siributwong captured the first doubles win for OU, ousting Jai Corbett and Florian Nicoud 6-4.

OU Spanish tandem Guillermo Alcorta and Axel Alvarez won the tiebreaker and secured the doubles point for OU, topping Hunter Koontz and Joao Monteiro 6-5.

“We played good in doubles,” head coach John Roddick said. “They’re well coached in doubles, Virginia Tech was very fundamentally sound and we went out and played very solid doubles. Our guys did a good job of staying solid and taking care of their serves.”

OU collected three points in singles, winning the match for the Sooners.

At the No.4 position Webb earned the first singles point after beating Monteiro in straight sets 6-2,6-2.

Freshman Andrew Harris claimed the next point for the Sooners, with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Koontz.

Alcorta clinched the Sooner win after defeating Amerigo Contini 6-1, 6-4.

“We’ve talked a lot about extending leads because we’ve been able to get a lot of leads,” Roddick said.” In three of the points in singles that we won we did a good job of winning the first set and then getting early leads in the second.”

“We talk about those things and we like to see them happen, so it was a good win.”

OU faces No. 31 Northwestern in the championship match tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Headington Family Center. Virginia Tech and Tulsa will play in the consolation round.
