NORMAN, Okla. – The Sooners return to action, after a bye in the mid-week, in a 1:00 pm match at Baylor this Saturday.
1. About the Sooners
Oklahoma is 15-4 on the year and an even 3-2 in the Big 12 following last Saturday’s win over Kansas State. Senior middle blocker Sallie McLaurin leads the way for the Sooner attack with 3.66 kills per set and a league-leading .445 hitting percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Kierra Holst is second on the team in both categories at 3.01 and .241. Sophomore libero Taylor Migliazzo leads the team with 3.84 digs per set, while senior outside hitter Keila Rodriguez has contributed on both sides of the ball with 3.41 digs and 2.27 kills per set.
2. Last Time They Met
Oklahoma secured its third straight victory in a four-set contest (25-21, 23-25, 25-23, 25-23) in Waco on November 7, 2012. Three Sooners combined to knock down double-digit kills, including Morgan Reynolds, Tara Dunn and McLaurin. Reynolds struck down a team-high 14 kills to go with six digs and two blocks. Adom notched 13 kills for the Bears and Kate Harris dished out 50 assists.
3. Approaching the top 10
McLaurin notched the 1,000th kill of her career with her third of the night in a 3-2 win over No. 25 BYU on September 7. In that match, she registered a then season-high 21 kills, to go with a .677 hitting percentage and eight blocks. McLaurin enters the match with 1,169. She is is just one back of tying Margaret Page (1983-87) for 10th all-time at 1,170.
4. Bouncing Back
In 2012, the Sooners were 8-2 when returning to the court after a loss, bouncing back in good form, all but twice. This season, Oklahoma has bounced back from its first four losses with 3-1 wins over Portland State, LIU Brooklyn and Kansas State and a 3-2 win over No. 25 Iowa State. The Sooners last lost back-to-back games on November 10 and 14, 2012 with 3-0 defeats to No. 20 Iowa State and No. 22 Kansas.
5. Set ‘Em Up, Knock ‘Em Down
Sophomore setter Julia Doyle set a program record for assists in a four-set match during the 25-point rally-scoring era with 53 against Kansas State on October 12. She surpassed Brianne Barker, who dished out 50 three times, last against Iowa State in 2010. Doyle’s previous career-high was 50 in a five-set win over Arizona State in the 2012 NCAA First Round in Provo, Utah.
6. Hitter’s High
Through 19 matches, McLaurin is hitting a career-best .445, besting her .357 attach rate from a year ago. She ranks first in the Big 12 and is three points ahead of Texas freshman Chiaka Ogbogu, who has only played 30 sets compared to McLaurin’ s 70. The next closest player in the league with at least 50 sets played is Iowa State’ Tenisha Matlock at .354; 91 points back of McLaurin. She also ranks eighth nationally, trailing Florida’s Chloe Mann for first at an impressive .540.
7. All-Time vs. Baylor
The Sooners own the all-time series against the Bears, 33-15. Oklahoma has won eight of the last nine matches dating back to 2008, with Baylor’s lone win during that stretch coming in 2011 in Norman. The Bears won the first two matches of the series in 1976 and 1977, but the Sooners then rattled off the series’ longest winning streak of eight matches from 1979-89.
