Sooner Notebook: Five Notes for Week Six
The Oklahoma soccer team will open Big 12 Conference play this weekend on the road in Waco, Texas against the No. 12 Baylor Lady Bears. BU marks the second ranked opponent OU has faced in three matches, and the fifth top 25 foe Oklahoma has taken on this season. Baylor is 7-0-2 in 2013 and has posted six shutout victories in non-conference action. OU posted a 3-3-2 mark in Big 12 play last year, including a 1-1 double-overtime tie with Baylor on Sept. 21.

Following last weekend’s matches at BYU and Utah, OU head coach Matt Potter commented that he felt his team had become “a better team” because of the contests. The Sooners fell in a tough 3-2 loss to No. 11 BYU before battling to a 1-1 tie in double-overtime with Utah. Oklahoma held their opponents scoreless until at least the 78th minute of play in both matches.

3. CHASING 100
With Oklahoma’s victories over Texas State, Kennesaw State and Oral Roberts this season, head coach Matt Potter currently holds 98 career victories spanning two schools and 11 seasons. Potter accumulated 88 victories at his previous stop at Washington State before arriving in Norman prior to the 2012 season. He led the Sooners to a 7-9-4 record in his first season at Oklahoma in 2012.

Baylor is 5-0-1 at home this season and currently owns a nation-best unbeaten streak of 30 matches. The Sooners, in turn, are on the hunt for their first true road win of the season after posting a narrow loss to BYU and a tie with Utah on the road last weekend. The challenge will not be an easy one for OU: Baylor’s defense has only surrendered one goal this season (at Missouri) and has not allowed a goal at home in its last seven matches.

OU’s match against Baylor on Friday night will cap a three-match road stand spanning two weeks of play. Oklahoma went on the road last weekend, facing BYU and Utah on Sept. 19 and 22, respectively. OU has played a total of six true road matches this fall in front of an average crowd size of over 1,300 fans. The Sooners return home on Oct. 4-13 with a stretch of three home matches against Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and Iowa State.
