Running Back Roy Finch
Sept. 3, 2013

On the breakdown of running backs in games:
“It’s the first game and we learned a lot of new things over the summer that we just wanted to get a feel of and what it would look like against another team. So we kind of utilized some of the plays where there were pockets open. We’re just really excited for this game coming up, the game plan and executing it. There were a lot of big plays out there on Saturday that we missed, so we’re excited about the options.”

On his personal thoughts on the ULM game:
“I thought it went good. I have not looked at my stats, but I just tried to make plays whenever I had the ball in my hands and I was just really excited to do the things that I did. It was about me being a better player with the ball in my hands.”

On if this is a better fitting offense:
“I would say that it doesn’t put as much pressure on the running backs when you have a quarterback who can both throw and run. He [Trevor Knight] is very smart and he will put us into positions where we will be out in space and as running backs that is what you love. He is very talented and it is good to see him progress.”

On the offense from the spring compared to now:
“I feel like personally, for me, I am not where I need to be yet. Just because there are new things that we are installing and I am just excited for this offense and what we can do the. The sky is the limit for this offense.”

On the running backs splitting the carries:
“I foresee that this year, I didn’t see our passing stats for this game, I know they weren’t that good, but we carried the team on the ground this past Saturday and that’s what we need to do for the rest of the season to get Trevor [Knight] more comfortable in the pocket because he is a first-year starter. We just need to get the guys out of the box, that would be really good for us.”

On having a breakout running back:
“I really don’t know, and it is a long season. All of us are talented and all of us bring something a little different to the table. We are all really good backs and we all do things a lot differently than each other. We all have that ability to make plays, no matter where we are on the field and I am just excited for what we will do this year.”

On being effective in space:
“Being out in space is what I love but I can also take a power or an inside zone; I have been doing it all summer and I have been very affective at it. It doesn’t really matter where I get the ball because I am a playmaker and I will make plays.”

On facing a more physical team in West Virginia:
“They are a totally different team that what they did last year. They had players like Tavon [Austin] who is toe-to-toe with us on the offensive side. I feel like this is going to be more of a defensive game, I don’t know why. They are more physical upfront; they always have been more physical upfront. They always play hard; they always play fast and if we don’t come up with a fast start it will be pretty hard to get ahead because they have a fast play.”

On settling down in the second half:
“They did a great job; they just needed to settle down. ULM was giving us a lot of looks that we didn’t see or practice for. They had guys in the box moving around and it was hard for the centers and guards to know where they were going to go. We settled down. OU always likes to make second-half adjustments and we went into the locker room and just played OU football.”

On being an up-tempo offense:
“We condition ourselves in the summer to do what we do now. The conditioning and the weight room with Coach [Jerry] Schmidt, that’s why he does what he does so that we are prepared for it. We get tired out there at times, but we keep going and we have other guys who can step in and keep the train going.”
