NORMAN, Okla. – University of Oklahoma volleyball coach Santiago Restrepo has announced the team’s schedule for the upcoming 2013 season. The Sooners' 30-match schedule is set to begin on Aug. 30 against Wisconsin-Milwaukee at the Holiday Inn West Invitational, hosted by Western Michigan. OU’s slate features 12 home matches at McCasland Field House and 12 matches against eight teams that competed in the 2012 NCAA Tournament.
“Every single tournament will bring big and different challenges,” said Restrepo. “The Western Michigan tournament is hosted by a team that came here last season and played against us really well. They’re a scrappy defensive team that picks a lot of balls. The same can be said of Northwestern and Milwaukee. It will be an especially tough weekend to get the right combination of lineups on the floor.”
Oklahoma will play in four early season tournaments, including hosting its annual NIKE Invitational between Sept. 19 and 21. The Sooners will also compete at the Portland State Tournament (Sept. 6-7) and the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational, hosted by Missouri State (Sept. 13-14).
“The PSU Tournament will be tough against Portland State, Pacific and BYU, who took us out of the NCAA Second Round last year” Restrepo continued. “The Cougars are very tall and physical with very good blockers.”
At Western Michigan, Oklahoma will also compete against Northwestern, while facing Pacific and BY at Portland and Alabama A&M and Middle Tennessee State in Missouri.
The home portion of the schedule kicks off with a non-conference match on Sept. 3 against Arkansas, who made an appearance in last season’s NCAA Tournament. Following the tournaments in Portland and Missouri and a non-conference game at intrastate rival Tulsa (Sept. 17), OU returns home to take on Nebraska-Omaha in the opening match of the NIKE Invitational on Sept. 19. The Sooners will also play Long Island, an NCAA participant, on Sept. 20 and Miami on Sept. 21.
“At our NIKE Invitational, Miami comes in with a lot of NCAA postseason experience and a talented new coach. Each opponent presents a different challenge and every single match will be important to our preparation for Big 12 play.”
The Big 12 slate gets underway at home against Texas Tech on Sept. 25. Oklahoma’s first test on the road in the league will be at defending National Champion Texas on Sept. 28. The Longhorns make the trip to Norman on November 2.
“Like every year, all Big 12 opponents are going to be extremely tough to play; whether home or away,” stated Restrepo. “We have to bring it every day.”
The remaining home schedule plays out against Iowa State (Oct. 5), Kansas State (Oct. 12), West Virginia (Oct. 26), TCU (Nov. 13), Baylor (Nov. 16) and Kansas (Nov. 30) in the regular season finale.
Additional opponents that appeared in the NCAA Tournament include BYU, Tulsa, Iowa State, Kansas and Kansas State.
