NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma junior-to-be Nick Papac captured the men’s singles title at the USTA Missouri Valley U.S. Open National Playoffs Sectional Qualifying Tournament in Prairie Village, Kan., Sunday.
Papac, a Norman native, defeated Chris Haworth (Oklahoma City), an Oklahoma State student-athlete, 6-3, 6-1 in the championship match at Homestead Country Club.
The Sooner advances to the U.S. Open National Playoffs, held during the New Haven Open at Yale in August. The winner of the men’s singles event there receives a wild card into the 2013 U.S. Open Qualifying Tournament held the week prior to the U.S. Open.
Papac claimed a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Anthony Perkins in the round of 16 before outlasting Dusty Boyer 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in the quarterfinal round.
After falling 6-7 in his first semifinal set to local prep star Trey Daniel, Papac led 3-1 in the second set when his opponent retired due to an injury.
Papac was instrumental in the Sooners’ defense of the Big 12 Tournament Championship, clinching the doubles point with partner Lawrence Formentera and earning a second point with a singles victory.
