NFL Roll Call

A total of 47 NFL coaches and scouts representing 29 different franchises were present at the Everest Training Center for Oklahoma’s Pro Day on Wednesday. Notable attendees included former New England Patriots assistant head coach/offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia, who was seen evaluating offensive linemen at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, as well as today in Norman. San Diego Chargers offensive line coach Joe D’Alessandris worked in during offensive line drills, while Cincinnati Bengals defensive line coach Jay Hayes was on the field during the defensive line drills.

Sooner Superlatives: Biggest & the Best of the Measurables

Plenty of size, strength and speed was on display Wednesday. Not surprisingly, some of the biggest bodies on the squad belonged to the offensive linemen, while safety Quentin Hayes turned in one of the best individual performances of the day in individual testing.

NFL Network on the Scene

In addition to the myriad of personnel men and local media, NFL Network had two crews on the scene, including college football analyst and former NFL player, Bucky Brooks. Brooks caught up with Jessica Coody of SoonerSports TV and offered a few insights on the Sooners.

On Blake Bell:

“He made the transition this year and you saw him make steady improvement. Obviously he has to continue getting better, especially as a blocker, but he does bring some intriguing qualities to the position. I think he’s going to have a chance.”

On Jordan Phillips:

“He’s a super athlete. He’s very athletic and agile. When he has the motor running hard he can be a dominant player. When you get that kind of guy with his size, it’s hard to find guys with those special qualities not only against the run, but also against the pass. He has a chance to be an outstanding player in the league.”

On Tyrus Thompson and Daryl Williams:

“When you talk to scouts, guys are really split on which guy is more talented. Some think Thompson is more talented and that the game comes very easily for him, but in Williams you have a rock-solid player. When you make decisions in the draft room in terms of who you want to add to your team, sometimes consistency wins out. What I do know is that both guys are going to get an opportunity to play.”

Dorial Green-Beckham Gives Sooners High Praise

While he never took a snap for the Sooners, WR Dorial Green-Beckham took the opportunity to thank the University of Oklahoma for the opportunity to be part of the team last season.

“Even though I didn’t get a chance to play with these guys, I’m going to have some great memories of Oklahoma,” said the wideout, who has been projected by some as a first-round pick. “It’s been great to be here and work with great people like Coach Stoops.

“One thing that I do remember is right after I signed with Missouri, the only two guys (from other teams) who called and congratulated me were Coach Stoops and Jay Norvell … (My coaches and teammates) supported me 100 percent, or even more than that.”

Final Thoughts From the Everest Center

More than one scout we spoke with was impressed with the chiseled physique of Aaron Ripkowski and the solid numbers that he turned in during the individual testing. A versatile player, Ripkowski’s ability to work in a variety of positions and contribute on special teams could bode well for him at the next level … Other than Dorial Green-Beckham, if there was one other individual that scouts wanted to speak with individually, it was Jordan Phillips, who has also been projected in some mock drafts as a late first-round selection … Multiple NFL personnel indicated that as a whole, Oklahoma arguably has the best class of offensive linemen entering the draft … With no quarterbacks participating in OU’s Pro Day, Sooners graduate assistant coach Tyler Tettleton threw the ball during route-running sessions for receivers. Tettleton is a Norman North High School graduate and played collegiately at Ohio University.
