NEW ORLEANS – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team came from a set down to claim a 3-1 win over Southern Miss at Devlin Fieldhouse in its first of two matches at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Classic on Saturday morning. The Sooners finished the weekend 2-1 to leave New Orleans at 3-6 after a 3-1 loss to Tulane in the nightcap.
Southern Miss edged Oklahoma in the first, 29-27. The Golden Eagles raced out to an early 8-2 lead before the Sooners used their first timeout of the day. OU grabbed its first lead of the match at 13-12 on a kill by junior outside hitter Morgan Miller (Magnolia, Texas).
Oklahoma pulled the match even with a 25-18 win in the second by hitting a collective .281. Miller’s eighth kill of the match gave the Sooners separation in the second and junior outside hitter Alyssa Enneking (League City, Texas) finished off the set with a kill.
To end the third, freshman middle blocker Sarah Maras (Tulsa, Okla.) and Miller teamed up for the combination block to win it. Oklahoma ultimately won the match with a 26-24 victory in the fourth.
Miller posted her second double-double of the weekend with a team-high 19 kills and 18 digs. Enneking added 18 kills.
Freshman libero Kira Morikawa (Honolulu) picked up a team-leading 21 digs on the defensive side of the ball, while Maras totaled seven blocks, including two solos. Junior setter Audrey Alford (Norman, Okla.) paced the OU offense with 47 assists.
Oklahoma won the first set, 25-17, behind four kills from freshman middle blocker Paige Anderson (McKinney, Texas), whose fourth came on set-point. Tulane (8-2) responded by taking the three ensuing sets by scores of 25-18, 25-21 and 25-16.
Enneking posted a double-double for the Sooners with 18 kills and 14 digs. Anderson and junior outside hitter Madison Drescher (Southlake, Texas) were second on the team with nine kills.
Alford added a double-double from the setter spot with 35 assists and 13 digs. Morikawa led OU in digs once again with a season-high 23. Anderson led the Sooner defense with five blocks.
Lexie Douglas led the Green Wave attack with 13 kills and picked up 11 digs. Hannah Shaw tallied 12 kills and hit a team-best .370.
Oklahoma is on the road for one final early season tournament next week in College Park, Md. The Sooners face Washington Thursday, September 14 before matches against Maryland and Southern California a day later.
