NORMAN – The No. 50 Oklahoma women’s tennis team picked up its fifth consecutive win, defeating Wichita State, 5-2, Saturday at Headington Family Tennis Center.
Oklahoma (8-2) opened the match with the doubles point. Julie Byrne and Malene Stripp added another tally to the win column, defeating Wichita State's (5-6) Gabriela Porubin and Fatima Bizhukova 6-3 at the top of the lineup. The Sooners' duo snapped Porubin and Bizhukova’s three-match winning streak to go 4-1 this season.
“Winning is always a really great confidence boost, but I think a greater confidence is having healthy players that are out there fighting and fearless,” said head coach Audra Cohen.
OU's Serena Nash and Christie Brigante fell to Marta Bellucco and Giulia Guidetti, 6-1, in their debut as a pair at the No 3. line.
Juniors Lily Miyazaki and Simran Sethi were left to decide the doubles point, which they won for the Sooners by defeating the Shockers' Tanaporn Thongsing and Ting-Ya Hsu, 6-4. With the match tied at 3-3, Miyazaki and Sethi used a break of serve to close out the match and claim the double points for OU.
No. 22 Miyazaki continued her six-match winning streak in singles with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Guidetti on court one. Miyazaki trailed 2-0 in the first set before winning the next six games to close out the set. Miyazaki and Guidetti traded games early in the second frame before Miyazaki pulled away for the win.
Byrne picked up her eighth victory this season with her 7-6 (2), 6-3, defeat of WSU's Bizhukova on court four. In a tight opening set, Byrne won a first-set tiebreaker and cruised to a straight-set win.
At No. 6, Brigante clinched the victory for Oklahoma with a 6-3, 7-5 defeat of WSU's Hsu. In her second singles match this season, the junior came out strong, taking an early lead in the first frame before closing it out before holding off Hsu in the second set.
Ann Selim topped Bellucco, 6-4, 6-3, in the No. 5 slot for her fifth consecutive victory. Selim trailed 3-0 before battling back to win set one. The freshman had momentum going into the second frame, and made quick work of Bellucco to pick up a straight-set victory.
“I just had to be gritty today,” Brigante said. “I think that helped my confidence a lot just because I know that in any situation I can go out there and get it done.”
Oklahoma opens its Big 12 slate next weekend when it hosts Baylor on Friday at 5 p.m. CT at Headington Family Tennis Center. Weather permitting, the match will be played outdoors. Admission is free.
