NORMAN In its first-ever “pink” match for breast cancer awareness, the Oklahoma women’s tennis team defeated South Alabama, 4-1, Saturday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

“Pink matches always represent having toughness to get over adversity, and the fact that we’re able to come out here and that these are six healthy women out there playing and just fighting – I think they lead by example,” said head coach Audra Cohen of the significance behind the match.

With the win, Oklahoma improves to 6-2 on the season, while South Alabama drops to 8-4.

The Sooners gave up the doubles point to open the match. At No. 3, Serena Nash and Ann Selim fell to South Alabama’s Alina Zolotareva and Laura Matuskova, 6-2. Lily Miyazaki and Simran Sethi were defeated by the Jaguars' Alexandra Stiteler and Monica Mitta, 6-2, at the No. 2 line.

In the No.1 slot, Julie Byrne and Malene Stripp looked to extend their winning streak to four matches before play was halted. The pair trailed 2-0 before battling back for a 5-3 lead when South Alabama took the doubles point.

The Sooners quickly bounced back in singles play, beginning with Byrne’s 6-1, 6-0, rout of USA's Patricia Martins on court five. The freshman picked up her team-leading sixth singles win of the spring season.

At No. 3, Stripp also tallied another win with a 6-2, 6-3 straight-set victory. Stripp improved to 5-1 on the season in singles play.

Selim snapped USA's Alina Zolotareva’s undefeated season on court six. Selim collected her third consecutive win, defeating Alina Zolotareva 6-2, 6-3, to give OU a 3-1 advantage with three singles matches left on court.

No. 22 Miyazaki’s 7-5, 6-2, victory over Alexandria Stiteler on court one sealed the match for the Oklahoma. The junior took an early lead in set one before Stiteler tied the frame at 3. Miyazaki held on for a 7-5 win in the first set and then rolled past Stiteler in the second to close out the match.

“It was good to see everybody jump out there and really get hungry to get back to work in singles and just take the moment and really go from there,” said Cohen.

The Sooners are back in action Sunday at 11 a.m. CT, when they face Illinois at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

Weather permitting, the match will be played outdoors. Live stats will be available here.
