LAS VEGAS – Five Sooners scored in double figures as No. 20/22 Oklahoma opened the Puerto Rico Classic in Las Vegas, Nev., with a 81-69 victory over Xavier on Monday. The victory marked the 450th career win for OU head coach Sherri Coale.
OU trailed by as many as 10 points with less than three minutes to play in the first quarter, but an 11-2 run by the Sooners (8-2) to close the frame gave OU its first lead of the game at 22-21 after one quarter. From there, the Sooners outscored Xavier in each quarter and pulled away in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
Peyton Little led the Sooners tied a season-high 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting. The redshirt senior added in six rebounds along with three assists against Xavier (7-2). Little has led the Sooners in scoring seven times in te first 10 games this season.
Off the bench, Maddie Manning poured in 17 points and collected a team-high eight rebounds in 35 minutes of action. The Ankeny, Iowa, native is averaging 17.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per game over the last three contests.
For the third straight game, Nancy Mulkey scored in double figures as the freshman scored nine of her 10 points in the second half. The freshman scored seven straight points for the Sooners in the third quarter to extend OU's lead to double figures. Mulkey also added a season high seven rebounds along with one block.
T'ona Edwards finished with a career high three 3-pointers, burying two in the opening quarter. The senior, who collected 10 points, also added in three assists. Vionise Pierre-Louis picked up her sixth double-digit scoring performance of the year with 10 points and five rebounds.
The Musketeers bested OU in shooting percentage, .463-.433, but the Sooners answered with nine made 3-pointers on 18 attempts from beyond the arc. OU also outscored Xavier at the charity stripe as the Sooners finished 14-for-21 (.667) from the free throw line.
The Sooners won the rebounding battle by a decisive margin, finishing with a 45-29 advantange on the glass. OU logged 18 offensive rebounds, scoring 17 second-chance points.
Xavier's Kindell Fincher scored 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting, while the Musketeers' leading scorer Raeshunn Gaffney added in 14 points, but was held scoreless by the Sooners in the second half.
The Sooners continue the Puerto Rico Classic in Las Vegas against California on Tuesday at 8:45 p.m. CT. The game will be streamed live here. The tournament was moved to Las Vegas due to the threat of Zika virus in Puerto Rico.
