NORMAN – No. 12/12 Oklahoma fell, 74-67, to Oral Roberts on Sunday at the Lloyd Noble Center.
OU (5-2) jumped out to a 42-31 halftime lead by shooting 50 percent from the floor in the first two quarters. T'ona Edwards gave a spark to the Sooners offensively, scoring eight points in the second quarter to give OU the advantage at the half.
The Sooners led by as many as 17 points in the third quarter, but Oral Roberts (4-4) held OU's offense in check in the second half as the Golden Eagles outscored the Sooners, 43-25. The Golden Eagles held OU scoreless for nearly the final six minutes, using an 18-0 run in the fourth quarter.
“I don’t think we had good rhythm all day," head coach Sherri Coale said. "I really didn’t even when we were 66 percent from the field in the second quarter. Our attack was better, but defensively we didn’t have the vibrato that we had. We were pushing that all day. I just feel like we were never completely as a unit immersed in the game."
Redshirt senior guard Peyton Little led the Sooners in scoring with 12 points on 4-of-14 shooting while junior center McKenna Treece led OU in rebounding with 11 boards in a career-high 24 minutes played off the bench.
Senior guard Gioya Carter contributed 11 points and added in four rebounds, while freshman Chelsea Dungee was in double figures for the third straight game, scoring 11 on 3-of-5 shooting. Edwards finished with a season-best 10 points in the first half, and tallied three assists.
ORU's Lakota Beatty led all scorers with a game-high 20 points. Beatty finished 6-of-15 from the floor, 3-of-9 from 3-point range and 5-of-5 at the free throw line. Maria Martianez picked up a double-double for the Golden Eagles, recording 18 points and 13 rebounds. Kaylan Mayberry added in 12 points and four assists.
The Golden Eagles outshot Oklahoma, .431 to .371, from the field and won the rebounding battle, 45-37. ORU scored 17 points off of OU's season-high 19 turnovers.
The Sooners return to action on Thursday night against UTRGV at 7 p.m. CT. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Oklahoma.
