University of Oklahoma head baseball coach Skip Johnson announced the addition of Evan Mistich to his 2017-18 staff on December 1, 2017. Mistich, who played two seasons at OU, will serve as the Sooners’ volunteer assistant.

“He comes from a great junior college program in Grayson, where he got some terrific experience,” said Johnson. “Now with him coming back to his alma mater, I think this means a lot to him. He’s a fierce worker and is going to put himself out there to be a better coach and to better this team.”

Mistich’s primary duties will be coaching the Sooner outfielders, while also serving as the first base coach in games. He returns to his alma mater, where he was an outfielder and designated hitter from 2011-12, after a brief stint as the volunteer assistant at Oral Roberts during fall ball. He began his coaching career at Grayson College in 2017.

In two years at Oklahoma, Mistich was a part of two NCAA Regional teams, including the 2012 team that reached the Super Regionals. He made 94 starts in his Sooner career and hit .289 with five home runs and 51 RBI. Mistich earned Big 12 All-Tournament Team in 2012 and All-Big 12 Honorable Mention in 2011. He began his playing career at Tulane in 2009, where he made 24 starts and hit .256, before moving on to Panola (Texas) Junior College, where he hit .356 with 10 home runs.

“His experiences as a player and coach at the Division I and junior college levels are valuable,” added Johnson. “Doors open differently for different players and coaches. He’s detail-oriented, organized and is hungry to get going back at OU.”

Mistich, a native of Houma, La., graduated from Oklahoma with a Bachelor of Science in multidisciplinary studies.
